Made to measure curtains and blinds are the single most transformative update for a room. Yes, trust us, you read that right! They’ll quite literally revive or reinvent a room, depending on the scope of your project.
Window treatments have the enchanting ability to bring a new lease of life to existing decor (think… you love everything in the room except the drapery); or act as the starting point for a total refurbishment (the curtains/blinds form the inspiration for the rest of the scheme). Made to measure curtains and blinds also help you to control the light, privacy, temperature, even the noise, in a room.
A personalised, direct-to-your-door service means that you get a professionally-made and polished window treatment that fits your needs perfectly and ticks the boxes for all your requirements from the fabric to the linings. There's no hassle about ordering bolts of fabric, dusting off the sewing machine, sourcing a reliable maker or waiting for quotes to come through.
“At Warner House, we pride ourselves on the quality of our made to measure service. Hand-sewn in Lancashire, our luxurious curtains and Roman blinds are available in a choice of over 600 fabulous fabrics,” says founder and owner Lee Clarke. “Crafted using traditional skills, our window treatments are available in a range of heading styles, interlined as standard and finished with a premium eco-friendly lining with a blackout option.”
Here we share five design tips for made to measure curtains and Roman blinds. Using our collection of renowned and decorative archive patterns and plains, such as Palampore in Archive (shown) you’ll be rewarded with premium window treatments, tailored for you and your home.
Design tip 1: Consider the room and its use
All interior designers will tell you that before you even think about the aesthetic of your window treatments, it pays to go back to basics. Consider the form and function of the space in which they will be hung. A busy family living room, for instance, plays a very different role to a sanctuary-style main bedroom and ensuite (as shown here with Les Pecheurs in China Blue Blind).
Make a practical list of the purpose of the room. What is its primary task – eating, working, entertaining, relaxing, sleeping, bathing? What natural light does it get during the day and is it warm or cool when you are in it? Are there any privacy or noise issues you want to address? By starting at ground zero, you can build a window treatment scenario that is functional and performance orientated.
Design tip 2: Think about impact
Next step is to contemplate the atmosphere you’re after in the room. Confident and eclectic, or refined and discreet? The mood in a space can be manipulated using three simple principles: colour; pattern; and texture.
Warm archive colours (from the red, orange and yellow families) feel lively and exciting; cool ones (blue, green and violet) appear tranquil and restful; neutrals are grounding and timeless.
When it comes to choosing a pattern, there is endless choice from botanical trails to vintage florals, animal prints to smart stars and stripes, and from global ikats to historical toiles. If you’re feeling a bit bewildered, a good place to start your thinking is the context of your house. A period townhouse with good architectural bones will happily take a large-scale decorative heritage design, such as Mughal Trail in Cinnabar as shown here in @manwithahammer’s sitting room. A charming chintz inspired by the garden may suit a relaxed country cottage. Likewise, a room that already has a high-use of pattern, on say a rug or upholstered furniture, will benefit from a plain fabric in a hue teased from the existing decor.
And finally, texture. The textile and its handle will bring another layer of interest to your window treatment. The choice of velvet, for instance, brings with it a sense of plush glamour; a classic linen, handsome good looks; and cotton chintzes, sophistication and sheen.
Design tip 3: Consider curtains for classic style
Made to measure curtains in captivating, historical designs result in up-scale window coverings that will frame a view perfectly.
Curtains sit outside the recess of a window and are hung from an on-show curtain pole (usually made from wood or metal) or a concealed track that is attached to the wall above. Think of the curtain and the means by which it hangs as one treatment; they should complement each other and come from the same style ethos.
Depending on the position of the window, you can choose between a pair (two) or a single (one) curtain. Singles can be useful if you don’t have room to pull back the curtain on one side or if a curtain is to cover a doorway.
The heading at the top of the curtain dictates how the fabric drapes. As Lee Clarke explains: “We recommend one of three heading types: deep pencil pleat; double pinch pleat; and triple pinch pleat. These headings have been selected as they each perfectly complement Warner House designs, delivering grandeur and luxury.”
Deep Pencil Pleats are made up of small individual pleats. These deep 6” pencil pleat headings deliver a smart, classic finish and can be hung on any type of curtain track or pole, including on a curtain track in a bay window. Consisting of tightly gathered folds, the curtain can be pulled to the desired width. Curtains with pencil pleat headings will take up more space than pinch headings when stacked back.
Double and Triple Pinch Pleats are hand-sewn pleats which gather the curtain fabric into neat folds. Pinch pleat headings present with a sophisticated, elegant look. “We offer two variations of the pinch pleat; double pinch pleat (as shown here on Orissa in Indigo) and triple pinch pleat, using more fabric but delivering an even fuller drape,” says Lee Clarke. Pinch pleat headings offer good stack back, with the concertina action of the pleats meaning that the curtains do not take up too much space when pulled back.
Design tip 4: Choose Roman blinds for chic style
Made to measure Roman blinds are a neat, chic and characterful way to cover windows. When closed, the panel of fabric is flat and when opened forms orderly horizontal folds in a concertina style. You can choose a discreet chain (in chrome or gold) that operates from either the left or right side depending on access.
Roman blinds make a harmonious and dimensional choice for medium to small windows (as shown here on Balmoral in Olive) or those with something underneath them, such as a radiator, sink or window seat. They can be fitted inside or outside the recess of the window (the space in which your window sits up to the wall). Inside the recess, the blind will sit precisely within the space; outside the recess, you can play with dimension and scale to create impact and retain more light. For added modernity and draught proofing, layer a Roman blind in the recess with curtains outside the recess for a sumptuous and tailored effect.
Design tip 5: Measure up
The final tip is be confident with your measurements. Hand-sewn curtains, such as Celeste in Charcoal shown, are made to your exact specifications so the dimensions of your window are all important and will ensure an elegant and effortless look on installation.
